Music can be pollution if it spoils the life of people living nearby. In a mainly quiet residential area it is unfair if people move in and then play loud music. We experienced this many years ago when UB40 members and crew played such loud music in the houses opposite that the floor of our kitchen vibrated.

However in an area such as Digbeth which is mostly commercial / recreational one can expect more noise from a pub- people have to have somewhere to enjoy loud music.

Sorry for being pedantic. That’s Block M.

I hope they age well too, but I’m not sure the white parts of the concrete panels will stand the test of time in Birmingham. Their texture may hold traffic film and not be easy to clean. I have a kind of vested interest in these buildings as I worked on the site from 2005 to 2008 on a visiting basis. Let’s hope they stand the test of time.

Doesn’t Our Lord Whitby live in the Black Country?

This game sounds like fun, though I’m at a bit of disadvantage as I have yet to find a good explanation of how to do twitter with hash marks and SMS.

Might I also suggest that the bus go on a tour of cultural hotposts under threat? Or is the express purpose of the Whitby bus to *avoid* any place where off-message input might get on board?

What always happens with these kinds of issues is that the lone voices of the individuals who make complaints drown out the opinions of the silent majority.

I currently work in a professional capacity in an office in the Digbeth area of the city. We can regularly hear rather dubious live music being practiced from 3 o’clock in the afternoon in one of Digbeth’s more run down live music venues. This doesn’t always make for the perfect environment in which to have discussions with clients and so on…. However, as regular visitors to these kinds of venues in the evening, and being greatly appreciative of one of the last areas of an un-sanitised Birmingham that we inhabit, we will NOT be telephoning the environmental health department to complain. I am sure there are many other workers, residents & visitors that feel this way. We’ve certainly got an office full of them.

I would imagine that among the numerous local websites, organisations who post these articles / blogs and who have been following the ongoing debate there is somebody with the skills / knowledge to create a ‘Keep Birmingham Music Live’ e-petition, myspace site, facebook group or whatever that can allow the silent majority of public opinion on this matter to be heard.

Point me in the right direction if something is already out there.

Some great points raised; Birmingham City Council needs to sit up and listen to the needs of independant venues in Digbeth.

Both the Rainbow and custard factory venues are supporting so much within creative music and the arts – the likes of which are not seen elsewhere in the city.

If the Rainbow is squeezed out by developers or a council which will not listen, it will be a serious loss for Birmingham.
